Delhi-ites Lifestyle

A holiday to an unknown place is mostly determined by the way its people extend their arms and open their hearts to strangers, beside the attractions that the city flaunts of. Fortunately, Delhi rejoices both these attributes and hence affords thousands of tourists round the year. Justly because of its geographical location, its denizens are an impressive blend of tradition and intellect. They are known to welcome modern ideas, inventions and fantasies of the modern social ethos, and caress them in their daily lifestyle. People belonging to various religious sects, castes and lingual groups nestle cheek by jowl to each other, with their socio-economic status taking a back seat. Interestingly, although they pamper a modern lifestyle and a frolic heart, still they maintain their traditions and love to walk on cultural paths.

Delhi is multi-cultured and multi-linguistic city with people from almost every parts of India. Delhi shares its borders with Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. The influence of these states can be found in the language and lifestyle of Delhi. People of Delhi are called "Delhi-ites". Delhi-ites are very advanced and open to embracing new customs and changes but at the same time they are very conscious of their culture. People of various caste, creed and culture live here with peace and harmony. This shows the "Unity in Diversity" among the people of Delhi. Growth of infrastructure, new avenues of business and employment have beckoned people from all parts of the country to migrate to Delhi in search of better livelihood. Today, Delhi holds the burden of additional population from other states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Haryana and Uttranchal.

The diversity in culture of Delhi can be seen in festival season where people from different religion come together for a common cause. This diversity is clearly visible on occasions such as Holi (Festival of Hindu) and ID (Festival of Muslims) being celebrated with joy and brotherhood. The flavour of Christmas is made more penetrating by the enthusiasm of Guru Purab (Sikh festival). Same ecstasy can be seen during Diwali and Buddha Purnima. Due to this very factor, Delhi has been proudly abbreviated as "Dilwalon Ki Delhi" and there is no denying the fact that the people here are very open-hearted, lively and they love their life

Prior to 1947, the people of the old city were predominantly Muslim, and most of them headed for Pakistan when trouble broke out. Their place was taken by Hindus and to a certain extent by Muslims from elsewhere in India, so while Old Delhi is still basically a Muslim city, it is inhabited largely by people who have been there for less than 50 years. This goes some way to explaining why so many of the fine havelis (mansions) of Old Delhi are so poorly maintained - the original owners have long gone, and the new owners have no pride in or sentimental attachment to the buildings.

In contrast, the vibrant New Delhi, pulsates with a modern outlook and a world-class way of living. People prefer to compete for materialistic affairs rather than thriving on forgotten memories. They rush to their workplace in the morning and return to enjoy their hearts out in bustling malls and colourful bazaars with their loved ones. Late night parties, media goof-ups, fashion fiestas, luxury and all these blended perfectly with a sincere effort to preserve their rich culture.

Shopping and mall culture in Delhi has changed the way people used to shop earlier. There are new shopping complexes and malls in Delhi where you can find all your shopping requirements under one roof.

Night life in Delhi is another addition to the new lifestyle being embraced by the people of Delhi. Night clubs in the city open till late night and you can eat, drink along with enjoying dance on the floor. Dance clubs in Delhi can be found at The Taj Palace (My Kind of Place), Maurya Sheraton (Ghunghroos), Park Hotel (Someplace Else), Hyatt Regency (Oasis) and Le Meridien (C.J.'s).

World class restaurants and hotels are other additions to the changing lifestyle of Delhi with popular chains like Pizza Hut, Mc Donalds and Nirulas being the hot favourites among the citizens of Delhi. You don't have to look for a restaurant all the time to have something for your appetite because there are many "take away" eateries in Delhi that are equally good in quality.

Multiplexes introduced new concept of featuring movies, multiple movies running simultaneously under one roof at same time.

More to lifestyle is the change in dressing sense of youngsters in Delhi. Walking through the university campuses or a popular market gives the feeling of a new culture and lifestyle in Delhi, which is very much similar to western culture. Having said that, we can not deny the fact that traditional values and cultural heritage still find importance in the lifestyle of Delhi

Interestingly, Delhi portrays a positive kaleidoscope of myriad religions, who dwell in perfect harmony. Apart from having nearly all the world's great religions represented, it also pampers varied creed and beliefs, from all over India and world.
